Despite their forces being set up and ready for battle, neither initiated any conflict. Leven had not come seeking a battle, but to negotiate. Charles sent one of his young attendants to the Scots with a message suggesting that both sides should come to a settlement, and Leven and the Covenanters readily agreed.[47]

It was widely believed that the eclipse in May had religiously spurred Charles into a desire for peace, but Goodare pointed out that the reason Charles initiated the negotiations on his own volition was likely because he was aware of the low morale of his forces, even amongst his own commanders. He also understood that even if he engaged Leven’s force and won a pitched battle, he would not necessarily win the war. His financial situation without the aid of Parliament was increasingly dire, and he would not be able to fund the conflict further.[48] Simultaneously, under the advisement of the Earl of Strafford, Thomas Wentworth, he knew that delaying the Covenanters via peace negotiations would buy him more time. Charles did not have the resources necessary for a prolonged war nor a good enough army to fight it, but he believed he would in a year’s time.[49]
